STETHS DOING WELL AT GC FOSTER

Thrills at GC Foster College
published: Sunday | January 20, 2008

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

EXCITING AND impressive are the two words that best described yesterday's performances at the inaugural Central Hurdles and Relays meet at G.C. Foster College.

On the day which saw 2003 World 100m champion Kim Collins running a 48.2 second leg on Racers Track Club's A team (3:16.69), which finished third behind Racers B (3:14.50) and UTech/MVP (3:15.88) in the clubs/institutions 4x400m relay, several other thrills arose in the other 1600m relays.

In the clubs/institutions women's section, the battle was between UTech/MVP and G.C. Foster College, both entering two teams. However, in the end, UTech/MVP with Anneisha McLaughlin and Nyoka Cole prevailed in 3:41.34, but not before they were given a third-leg scare by G.C. Foster's Schillonie Calvert, who ran a super leg for her team, which finished second in 3:43.67.

In the high school's section, Manchester girls and Munroe won in 3:50.31 and 3:21.64 ahead of STETHS (3:22.30) and Holmwood (3:51.24) respectively.

In the sprint relays, Holmwood (41.37) won the boys' Class One ahead of Glengoffe (43.83); STETHS (46.78) beat Manchester (47.62) in Class Two and St. George's (44.03) beat Glengoffe (44.02) in Class Three.

Manchester won the girls' Class Two (47.38) and Three (48.39) ahead of Vere, who were runners-up in 47.53 and 49.02 respectively. Vere (51.72) took Class Four ahead of Edwin Allen (52.87).

In individual events, Alpha's Rosemarie Carty (14.6) and Holmwood's Sashawna Bennett (14.59) took the girls' Class One and Two 100m hurdles respectively, while the Class Three 80m and Class Four 70m went to Rochelle Farquharson of STETHS (12.17) and Chelsea Montaque of St. Andrew High (11.55).

André Collins of JC (14.3) and Patrick Campbell of Munroe (15.29) took the boys' Class One and Two 110m hurdles.

Jerece Maxwell of Manchester Pioneers (46.41) and Andrea Reid of Holmwood (63.63) took the girls' Under-17 300m and Under-19 400m hurdles, respectively.
